Q – Hey Brian, now that spring is here, I have a question about footwear. I love flip-flops. I’ve worn them for years from Havaianas to Rainbow’s. I think they are great for sporting around the house or around town, but now that I have reached my mid-thirties I’m starting to wonder, is there an age limit on flip-flops like mini-shirts? – Ann
A – What a great question Ann! It really hits on one of the key points I make with every client, how to keep your wardrobe fun, trendy and still age-appropriate, and that includes footwear. You are absolutely right about flip-flops. They are easy, convenient footwear for spring and summer, and many people are wearing them as everyday footwear. Personally, I see them as a “college” shoe, but they are so ingrained in all age groups that they are going to be around for a long time. As far as the age appropriateness, for me it all depends on the state of your feet. Just as with any slide, sandal or thong, if you are going to expose your feet to the world, please make sure they are clean; well taken care-of and appropriately groomed. No one wants to see jagged, dirty toenails, calluses, or rough heels. It’s disgusting.
So Ann, I think you are perfectly fine wearing your flip-flops at home and around town as long as you take care of your feet. What I do not want to hear about are flip-flops at work. That is a major NO-NO! Flip-flops are not appropriate for work or any other professional settings.
